Chinese in Thailand

For some reason I can't get it through my head that speaking Chinese doesn't clarify communication here. I see Asian people and automatically speak Chinese apparently. The most common is saying thank you at restaurants or to cab drivers. I'm going to say it is because I've never been to an Asian country where they speak anything but Chinese. I should visit more places.
